Strength And Durability

Proper bamboo flooring installation
Bamboo is very durable when installed properly

When you think about a thin bamboo cane, it might seem almost flimsy. But in comparison to Red Oak, the most commonly installed wood flooring, it is actually 25% harder and just as strong. Bamboo is even harder than Rock Maple, making it an incredibly durable, impact-resistant form of flooring. Better still, it expands and contracts 50% less than other hardwoods. As a result, bamboo can be used in homes and in climates where high humidity or temperature variations make hardwoods impractical.

How durable is it? This very hard and very durable material is an average of 13% harder than maple. It is 27% harder than northern red oak and expands and contracts 50% less. Most people with pets find it harder and longer lasting that most other floor coverings.

How is it made? After at least 3 years of growth the bamboo's hollow round shoots are sliced into strips, which are boiled to remove the starch. The strips are dried and laminated into solid boards, which are then milled into flooring boards. The bamboo is treated with preservative, either before it is laminated, after, or both. It is dipped once for complete coverage with a low-toxic acrylic urethane featuring UV inhibitors. This process reinforces bamboo's natural resistance to water, mildew, and insects.

Tip: When installed properly the quality bamboo floor can often last longer than the person who installed it.
